Book in Progress — Part Six: Time Warp

I’m having a crisis. A mental break down or something. Nothing makes sense anymore. What is my book? What is a book? What is life? What am I doing here? I have no idea.

I’ve re-read this project so many times, it doesn’t make sense anymore. I feel like I’m in a time warp.

My current crisis is I decided to re-write the book in first person. I think it’s the best way to really get in Joshua’s (my main character) head. I really wanted the readers to be able to connect with him. The problem here is I hate writing in first person. Also, my book is a YA science fiction thriller, but can thrillers be written in first person? Usually it’s told in third with multiple POVs. Am I overthinking? What do you think?

It’s getting so hard! I’m currently working on re-writing act one. I can’t tell if it’s a mess or if I’ve read it so many times I can’t make sense of it.

This book was always a mess because it was a new genre and a story that had confused me for a long time. I went through nearly six different plots before I finally settled.

So far, I think switching to first person was a good choice. We get to see Joshua’s personality in a way that wasn’t possible before.

Chapter six is going to be a problem. Thankfully, I’m not there yet, but that’s the one chapter that Joshua’s not in that I haven’t worked out yet. It just doesn’t work to have him in this chapter but it’s a critical chapter with a major fight scene. I think I’ll just throw him in there anyway, even though I know none of the other characters in that chapter will want him there. Whatever, I’ll keep you posted.

I had the idea a while back for a sequel. I really don’t want to write another one, but the idea adds so much to the first book. I decided to work it into this book as one story. I’ll talk more about this later.

After taking a month off of blogging I wad fully prepared to jump right back in, but I am sick with Covid and because all the posts I was planing were more involved I had to put them aside for the time being. For those of you who are interested, I am doing just fine, but I’m very board. There’s only so much youtube and online shopping I can take before I feel overwhelmed.

It’s that time again to schedule posts again and I would love your feedback. Please answer this simple question. It only takes a second, and it will help me plan out this month!

And as always, if there is anything specific you would like to see me do, just leave it in the comments.

Thanks a bunch!

  1. Haha, this has happened to me before – it’s kind of like when I write/edit too much at a time, I have a creative burnout. It means I need a break from my world but it’s different for all of us – maybe you can try writing a short story that ISN’T fantasy/fiction! (I tried that once and had a lot of fun: tip? Pinterest is everything lol)

I personally enjoy writing more in the third person because if you’re writing something where other characters mean a lot to the MC (like a romance – slow burn especially) it really helps to have another POV in it. Hope this helps & good luck with your WIP :))

    1. Yes! I definetly need a break, lol. I just want to get this draft done before Nanowrimo, but I may take your advice and write a short story. Refill my creative cup and remind myself that I am not a terrible writer. And thanks for the thoughts on my pov problem!
