I don’t know about you, but I have always, ALWAYS wanted a crown, so I figured why spend money you don’t have when you could make one that may not be as awesome but WAY more affordable?
So whether this is for a costume or if you’re just curious or if you’re just really weird like me here you go.
- A cereal box.
- Scissors.
- Paint & Paintbrushes.
- Hot glue.
- A ruler.
- A pencil.
- Gems(optional).
- Glitter.
- An Exacto knife(or something like it).
Black Crown:
STEP ONE: DESIGN.
The first step is to measure your head and then mark where you need to cut (if you need to cut).
After that, you’ll need to draw the design.
I left the width of my ruler (about an inch) for the band and went from there.
Each point was about a 1″1/2 long, and a 1″7/8 wide, and a 1″1/2 apart.
STEP TWO: CUT OUT.
Cut out using your Exacto knife or a small pair of scissors.
If you’re making this for a child or for long term use I recommend doubling up on the cardboard.
Hot glue the ends together and needless to say you have a new crown!
But wait! we’re not done yet!
STEP THREE: GEMS.
Now you can either use gems from the craft store or you can make some as I did! here’s how!
First, you want to start out by drawing the shape(s).
Copy and cut however many you need.
Placement
The round shape is for the band between the points, the smaller teardrop shape is for the top part of the points, and the larger teardrop will go below the smaller one.
Use hot glue to make them look 3D…
STEP FOUR: PAINT.
I ended up painting the entire crown, using up a whole tube of paint before I realized I was using the wrong paint.
Both my acrylic and my watercolor paint come in the same style tube, and I forgot to read the label…
I couldn’t figure out why the paint was drying so light and chalky, turns out I was using watercolor the whole time…
So after realizing this, I repainted it with the right paint also changing the color scheme.
I mixed green paint with glitter for the gems.
I mixed my red paint with a burnt ember brown and lightly dusted that on the crown, using the same technic I used for my DIY Lightsaber!
And there you go!
Gold Crown:
STEP ONE: DESIGN.
Follow the same steps as the black crown, measure, and mark where you need to cut.
Draw the design.
The band is an inch. the long point at the front is 2″1/2, then a pattern of small points (1″) and medium points (1″1/2) repeats around the crown.
I drew a design under all the medium size points, as seen in the picture above.
STEP TWO: CUT OUT.
Very carefully cut out the design with the Exacto knife.
Glue the ends together.
STEP THREE: PAINT:
The only yellow paint I had on hand was a Lemmon yellow, which is far from the gold I was looking for. So I mixed my yellow with the smallest drop of orange and brown, and some gold glitter.
After it dried I dusted on a brown.
STEP FOUR: GEMS.
I used red jewels I got from the craft store for this one. I just glued them in between each design.
And you’re done!
